About Sealand Solar Scheme
The main component of the Sealand Solar Scheme will comprise solar panels up to 3m high mounted on metal frames with posts driven into the ground. Rows of panels - or arrays - will be spaced across the site and underground cabling will connect the arrays to a containerised switchgear unit in the south-west corner of the site next to the existing high voltage grid connection at MoD Sealand. A stone track will provide vehicular access for maintenance. Existing CCTV will be used to monitor the site.
The Sealand Solar Scheme will provide 3MW of 'private wire' electricity directly to the wider MoD Sealand site. There will be no need for a connection to the national grid at this time and no works beyond the MoD Sealand site.
The existing low value grassland in the south of the site will be enhanced with additional wildflower species and all retained low value grassland will be managed to encourage greater diversity. Artificial habitats will be included within the site boundary to support insect and small mammal populations. The Sealand Solar Scheme will achieve a permanent Net Benefit for Biodiversity.
Construction of the Sealand Solar Scheme will take approximately four months and it will operate for approximately 40 years. After this time it would be removed and the area restored or a further permission for renewing the components to continue generating electricity could be applied for ('repowering').
